明醫館李醫師為老友記講解雨天關節保暖

It has been drizzling with chilly winds for several consecutive days this week. Dear seniors, have your joints started sounding the alarm with aches, stiffness, and difficulty bending?

"When Wind, Cold, and Dampness combine, they form Bi syndrome (painful obstruction)." This famous quote from the Huangdi Neijing (Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon) is TCM's most classic description of rheumatic joint pain (Bi Syndrome). When rainy weather brings high humidity and sudden temperature drops, the three external pathogens—Wind, Cold, and Dampness—easily invade the body. This obstructs the meridians and slows down the circulation of Qi and Blood, leading to soreness, numbness, and stiffness in muscles, bones, and joints.

When patients with joint pain visit Yin-Yang TCM Center (To Kwa Wan and Mei Foo clinics), alongside oral Chinese herbal medicine, acupuncture, Tuina massage, and moxibustion treatments, Practitioner Lee also shares these 2 home tips for knee care and pain relief to help warm the meridians and dispel Wind-Cold!

I. Tip 1: For Joint Stiffness, Avoid Glutinous Rice ⛔️

Many people do not realize that diet has a significant impact on joint pain!

  • TCM Perspective: Glutinous rice is sticky in nature and extremely difficult to digest. Overconsumption easily obstructs Spleen and Stomach transportation, causing Dampness to linger in the meridians and joints. This hinders the circulation of Qi and Blood and worsens joint aches.

  • Modern Perspective: Glutinous rice has a high glycemic index (GI) and is hard to digest. Excessive intake can trigger systemic inflammatory responses, potentially leading to redness, swelling, heat, and pain in the joints.

💡 Special Reminder: With the Dragon Boat Festival approaching, various delicious rice dumplings (Zongzi) are mostly made of glutinous rice. Seniors should enjoy them in moderation and avoid overeating!

II. Tip 2: Stir-Fried Coarse Salt Warm Compress (Warming Meridians, Dispelling Cold & Dampness)

Coarse sea salt retains heat well and cools down slowly, providing long-lasting localized warmth. Sea salt is rich in minerals such as sodium chloride, magnesium chloride, and calcium chloride. Applied as a warm compress, it stimulates local blood circulation, promotes sweat and sebum gland secretion, and expels excess body waste and moisture. It offers excellent cold-dispelling and pain-relieving effects for Wind, Cold, and Dampness Bi pain in bones and joints.

  • Advanced Wind-Cold Dispelling Method:

    1. Prepare about 500g of coarse sea salt, add an appropriate amount of cloves and sliced fresh ginger.

    2. Stir-fry them together in a dry pan until hot.

    3. Pour into a cloth bag and apply warm compresses to aching knees, neck, shoulders, or back.

III. Practitioner Lee's Warm Advice: Staying Active Begins with Joint Care!

Although joint pain triggered by weather changes is common, ignoring it for a long time can easily lead to chronic arthritis or bone spurs. If your joint pain worsens on rainy days, or if your joints become red, swollen, or stuck, feel free to visit Yin-Yang TCM Center to consult Practitioner Lee for acupuncture and body constitution care!
