An auntie returning for a follow-up consultation for "Three Highs" (hypertension, hyperglycemia, and hyperlipidemia) walked into the consultation room with a bright smile. Curious, I asked her what good news she had.

She cheerfully replied: "Practitioner Lee! I just finished my follow-up with my Western doctor, and he said my readings look so much better—I don't need to increase my medication for now! I was so happy! But I just made up an excuse saying I've been exercising more lately. I didn't dare tell him I've been taking Chinese medicine to condition my body, just in case he scolded me..."

Hearing her words, I smiled knowingly and wanted to share with everyone: There is really no need to hide the fact that you take Chinese herbal medicine. It can be done completely openly and with confidence!

I. TCM and Western Medicine Are No Longer Opposed: A New Trend in Hong Kong Community Healthcare

Many citizens harbor a misconception that Western doctors will always oppose consulting TCM practitioners, or that Chinese and Western medicines can never be taken during the same period. In reality, the TCM and Western medical systems in Hong Kong today enjoy far more opportunities for exchange and collaboration than ever before.

For instance, in a recent professional community healthcare course, family physicians, pharmacists, and we TCM practitioners sat together to explore clinical diagnostics, Western pharmacology, and pharmacy dispensing experiences. As an integral part of community healthcare, we TCM practitioners also shared insights on TCM syndrome differentiation and treatment.

Both Chinese and Western medicine share the same goal: striving for the health and well-being of our patients! Mutual communication and understanding allow us to provide patients with the most comprehensive and safest medical solutions.

II. How "Three Highs" Patients Can Ensure Safety When Combining Chinese and Western Medicine

For patients with "Three Highs" currently on Western medications who wish to use Chinese herbal medicine to regulate their body constitution and stabilize their health metrics, you can do so with peace of mind by following these principles:

  • Proactively Inform Your TCM Practitioner of Your Current Western Medications: Bring your Western prescription list when visiting. A registered TCM practitioner will assess the properties of your Western drugs (such as anticoagulants or antidiabetic agents) to avoid herbs that might interact negatively.

  • Follow Practitioner Guidance and Separate Chinese and Western Medicines by 1 to 2 Hours: Communicate openly so your TCM practitioner can recommend an appropriate dosing schedule. Generally, staggering the intake times prevents the medications from interfering with each other's absorption in the gastrointestinal tract, ensuring optimal therapeutic results. Never mix or combine medications on your own whim.

III. Practitioner Lee's Vision: Looking Forward to Integrative Care Easing Public Healthcare Burdens

Hong Kong citizens are fortunate to have the freedom to choose between TCM and Western medical care. We look forward to seeing TCM integrated more deeply into the public healthcare system to further ease the medical burden on the community, allowing every citizen to enjoy high-quality, integrative Chinese-Western healthcare services.

The next time you attend a follow-up with your Western doctor or visit Yin-Yang TCM Center, feel free to communicate openly—let your entire healthcare team work together to safeguard your health!
